Richmond Primary School has officially opened its new Specialist Resource Provision (SRP), creating much-needed specialist school places for children on the Isle of Sheppey.
The new provision welcomed its first pupils in September and represents a significant investment in specialist education within the local community. Located within a dedicated building named The Aviary, the provision has been commissioned by Kent County Council to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). Over time it will grow to provide up to 40 specialist places for pupils from across Sheppey and the wider Swale district.
The opening was formally marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Cllr Beverley Fordham, Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, who joined parents, school leaders and representatives from local schools.
Designed around a nurturing approach, with carefully designed therapeutic classrooms the provision provides a purpose-built environment where pupils can access highly personalised support tailored to their individual strengths and needs. The provision combines specialist teaching with wellbeing-focused spaces, state-of-the-art resources and therapeutic interventions, ensuring children are supported academically, socially and emotionally.
The new facility has been made possible through £160,000 of capital investment approved by Kent County Council, supporting the transformation of the dedicated building, specialist learning environments and outdoor provision.

Lesley Conway, Headteacher of Richmond Primary School, said:
“The opening of our SRP is a proud moment not only for Richmond Primary School but for families across the Isle of Sheppey. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed in an environment that understands and supports their individual needs.”
“We know how important it is for children to access high-quality specialist provision close to home. The Aviary enables us to provide a nurturing, ambitious and inclusive environment where pupils can flourish academically, socially and emotionally while remaining part of their local community. We are incredibly proud of what has been created and excited about the opportunities it will provide for children and families for many years to come.”
Cllr Beverley Fordham, Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said:
“It was a real pleasure to officially open The Aviary and see first-hand the fantastic new support available for children and young people on the Isle of Sheppey. I’d like to thank everyone who’s been involved in creating this great provision. The passion and commitment that has gone into it is clear to see, and it’s something that is really needed for local families.”
“Specialist Resource Provisions like this play an important role in helping children get the additional support they need while remaining part of a mainstream school community. That means young people can learn alongside their peers, stay connected to their local community and access the right support closer to home.”
As an integral part of the community, The Aviary will work closely with families throughout every stage of their journey, providing support from early intervention through to preparation for secondary education. The provision has been developed to help children build confidence, resilience, independence and a lifelong love of learning while ensuring they receive the specialist support they need to thrive.
The opening reflects a shared commitment between Richmond Primary School, The Stour Academy Trust and Kent County Council to expand local SEND provision, reduce travel for families and create more inclusive educational opportunities for children across Kent.
